Our History

A Brief History of the Shepherd of the Valley CHurch

Shepherd of the Valley Church was formed in the fall of 1991 when several families started to meet for a Bible study at the home of the founding Pastor Dennis T. Durasoff and his wife, Kathy.  Within a few months, those attending reached as many as 27 people.

During the early part of 1992, they began looking for a place to hold public services.  Permission was granted by the Hunterdon County YMCA to use the facility in Holland Township and the first public service was held on May 3, 1992.

When the YMCA closed the church moved their services to the Holland Township Elementary School and met there from 1994 – 1998.

During this time, the church purchased six acres on Spring Mills Road and constructed a 16,000 square foot worship center that was built primarily by church members. The groundbreaking dedication ceremony was held in the summer of 1995. The first service in the new worship center was held in August 1998. Pastor Durasoff retired in June 2012 and remains Pastor Emeritus.

During these years the church became an established fixture in the area, being very active with inspirational worship and Christian fellowship, with a focus on ministering to families locally and the surrounding communities.

The church building is located near the crossroads of county routes 614 and 519 and is centrally located in the township.   The fellowship meets primarily for worship and Christian education but also hosts many activities such as vacation Bible school, seasonal choir cantatas, fellowship dinners, family picnics, and youth activities.

In July 2012 Pastor David McLucas became the full-time Pastor and remained at Shepherd of the Valley for six years.  Pastor Dave furthered the efforts to within the core church focus, and added congregational mission trips, hosting trips to Israel, Haiti, and Puerto Rico.   Pastor McLucas left Shepherd of the Valley as a result of a call to a church in Charleston, Missouri in August 2018.

The members of the Shepherd of the Valley Church ratified of Rev. John P. Di Giorgio as the church’s new senior pastor in the March of 2019 by unanimous vote.  He previously served the Lord as a youth pastor, evangelist, itinerant preacher, co-pastor, and lead pastor.

The Shepherd of the Valley congregation is looking forward with great anticipation to see where the Lord leads in serving Him and ministering to others in the future. We will always remain grounded in solid faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and our Savior, the Holy Bible, the Great Commission and our love for others.
